Nehemiah chapter 4 reveals a stark warning about the dangerous trends of anti-Semitism. Identifying three phases of Jew-hatred in this chapter, CUFI’s Alastair Kirk uncovers a pattern that is remarkably recognisable throughout history and even today. Escalating in severity, they provide us with the warning signs that must not be ignored. We also consider why standing Israel is vital if we truly mean ‘never again’.

“Anti-Semitism has manifested itself in various forms throughout history, adapting with changing times and contexts, yet at its root the hatred and prejudice towards Jews has somehow always led to a pattern of consequences with consistent and familiar effects. What we read recorded in Nehemiah’s account is uncomfortably recognisable to us today. We could be reading about trends of anti-Semitism in first century Judea; or in medieval Europe or in the Russian pogroms, or in 1930s Germany prior to the worst genocide in history. But what is even more disturbing is that as we look at these passages, dare I say, we could also be defining anti-Semitism today. This is why I am so eager and moved to share this message with you today. Because Nehemiah Chapter 4 uncovers trends of anti-Semitism that must not be dismissed. “

“Anti-Semitism is the world’s most reliable early warning sign of a major threat to freedom, humanity and the dignity of difference. It matters to all of us, which is why we must fight it together.” – Lord Rabbi Sacks
