One of London’s most iconic monuments, the London Eye, is going to be used this Hanukkah as a giant menorah for the first time.

More than three million people visit the 400ft tall wheel, adorned with 32 viewing pods, every year. This makes it London’s most popular tourist attraction and one of the most eye-catching parts of the city’s skyline.

This planned event, which will see the pods lit up to represent a menorah, is taking place during Hanukkah on 5 December after a joint campaign from the Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) and the Jewish News worked with the lastminute.com London Eye to arrange the display.

Claudia Mendoza & Michelle Janes, Co-CEOs of the Jewish Leadership Council said: “We are thrilled that we are able to bring even more light to Chanukah this year together with the Jewish News through our partnership with the lastminute.com London Eye. This iconic landmark will join our Trafalgar Square Menorah in lighting up our capital city along with many others around the county.

“We hope that this marking can become a regular event to mark Chanukah and celebrate the richness of cultural diversity in the UK.”

Jewish News co-publishers Richard Ferrer and Justin Cohen added: “This will surely be one of the most visible celebrations of Chanukah in the world and is once again a wonderful expression of Britain’s place as a welcoming home to so many faiths and cultures. Huge thanks must go to the bosses of the London Eye and Jewish Leadership Council for bringing this vision to reality and adding much-needed light to the capital after a period of so much darkness.”
