The City Council of Paris has endorsed the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism.

Paris has unfortunately seen a large number of anti-Semitic incidents in recent years with France struggling to tackle the number of hate crimes against the Jewish community. However, the city council is trying to address this issue.

The vote was taken by the 163 delegates of the council with very few objecting in the hand vote. Exact numbers are unknown.

The IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism states: “Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”

It also includes important examples of anti-Semitism which include how hatred of Israel can be anti-Semitic.

We are now looking at which other capital cities will be next.
