To all our Jewish friends in the UK, Israel, and around the world, we wish you Shana Tova u’metukah – A good and sweet New Year!
During the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), it is traditional to dip apple slices in honey to symbolise the hope for a sweet year ahead.
We know that this past year has not always been sweet, especially when we look at the UK-Israel relationship. We have witnessed the UK’s recognition of a Palestinian state and just this week the Labour Government announced its plans to impose sanctions on Israel, to boycott Jewish products from Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), and to level false accusations against Israel.
They’ve chosen to do this just days before the High Holy Days, and at a time when the Jewish people have seen an increase of antisemitism against them in Britain, and when Israel is facing relentless pressure from all sides.
Despite all this, we choose to have hope for this year ahead because we serve a God who is far greater than all of these challenges.
“Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’” (Jeremiah 31:10)
God has not abandoned Israel, and neither have we!
As Christians, we want to be the friends who the Jewish people can always rely on.
When our Government curses Israel, we will bless Israel. When lies are spoken, we will proclaim the truth. When antisemitism rears its ugly head, we will confront it.
We Christians have Israel’s back. So let’s make this New Year count!
As Rosh Hashanah begins, we renew our commitment to be the friends to Israel who never let them down.
