Britain’s recently appointed Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has told the Jewish community that she is determined to ‘stamp out antisemitism’ and will be ‘a staunch friend of Israel’.
Speaking in a video to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, Truss also said she will fight against antisemitism.
“As Jewish families come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah it is a moment of renewal,” Truss stated, “This new year brings a new government and a new era for our country.”
Speaking from inside Downing Street, she added: “As Prime Minister, I promise to champion our Jewish community. I am determined to stamp out antisemitism.”
“I will be a staunch friend of Israel and I will always be on your side.”
Last week, Liz Truss told Israel that she is reviewing the location of the UK embassy to Israel. The comments, confirmed by Downing Street, were made during a meeting with Israel’s Prime Minister, Yair Lapid in New York. Number 10 also stated that the two leaders “discussed the huge opportunities to boost cooperation between the UK and Israel on strategic priorities, including defence, cyber security, trade and green technology”.
Congratulating Liz Truss, Yair Lapid expressed confidence that under her leadership, ties between Israel and the United Kingdom “will reach new heights in various fields, in particular the economy, innovation and security.”
“Prime Minister Truss is a true friend of Israel, and together, we’ll make the UK-Israel alliance even stronger,” tweeted Lapid following the meeting.
