The UK’s Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, has been urged to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iranian regime’s notorious militia which is a branch of Iran’s Armed Forces.

Currently the IRGC is subject to sanctions by the UK, however MPs say measures should go even further.

A report in December 2020 by the Commons foreign affairs committee called for the IRGC to deemed a terrorist group along with other toughened measures against Iran, mirroring a decision made by the US in August 2019.

Speaking in the House of Commons this week, Conservative MP for Bury South, Christian Wakeford, Iranian proxy terror groups including Hezbollah are “financed and directed by the IRGC” and pose a threat to “our allies and our own forces”.

Meanwhile, Scott Benton, Conservative MP for Blackpool South, said that like Daesh (ISIS) Iran”has sought to exploit power vacuums throughout the region and to build up influence” Iranian proxy terror groups including Hezbollah are “financed and directed by the IRGC” and pose a threat to “our allies and our own forces”.
