A Palestinian man tried to strangle an Israeli man at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on Wednesday, the army said.

The Israeli, who is a guard at the bridge, the main crossing point between Jordan and Judea and Samaria (the so-called West Bank), was in civilian clothes and talking on his mobile when the man tried to strangle him with a cable.

Video footage shows the man being attacked from behind and managing to struggle free from his attacker who tries to punch him a number of times. The Palestinian was then arrested by guards who ran to help.

The army said there were no injuries and the Palestinian man was taken for questioning.

There have been several attempted attacks at the crossing in the past.
