Sajid David, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government urged parties to speak up against anti-Semitism and pressed the Labour Party to do more to tackle hate crime in its ranks ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday.

During questions to Mr Javid’s department in the Commons on Tuesday, Conservative MP Ranil Jayawardena asked, “With Holocaust Memorial Day this week, does (Mr Javid) agree that on all sides of this House we really need to face up to anti-Semitism wherever we see it, and in whatever form it takes?”

Mr Javid replied: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a reminder for all of us of the horrors of what can happen, when mankind, what we can do to each other, if no-one speaks up.”

“And it is incumbent on all parties in this House… I noted just a few days ago the Jewish Labour Movement is appealing to the Labour Party leadership to actually throw out people who allegedly practice anti-Semitism”

“The Labour Party talks about combatting hate crime, but it has to show people that it really means it.”
