A Russian documentary that aired on Moscow’s REN-TV last week has suggested that a group of 300 Jews, freemasons and illuminati sank the Titanic to provoke an international crisis and install themselves as world leaders; a common thread in many “New World Order” conspiracy theories.
The documentary also linked various more recent events including the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the attacks on the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001.
Aleksey Zheleznev, who did a write up on the documentary’s “clearly expressed anti-Semitic subtext”, said that these accusations are “a reanimation in Russia of ‘The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, which is a vicious anti-Semitic forgery that inspired many in the Russian right at the end of the imperial period.
This new documentary is worrisome, not only because of the content, but also because of the platform in which it was broadcast.
Russian TV is a very powerful and influential to the way Russian’s think and surveys show that many Russians are quick to accept the information on these channels as the view of the Kremlin and that they are to be trusted.
