This week, the United Nations Security Council voted on whether the ‘State of Palestine’ should be made a full member at the United Nations. This recognition would have given legitimacy to the Palestinians that they have been longing for. Fortunately, the USA vetoed the vote. Shamefully, the UK was willing to let it become a reality. Here is why that decision was wrong.

The Bible makes clear that God is the founder and creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. Therefore, God holds the rights to everything. As the owner of this world, God specifically gifted a certain piece of land to the Jewish people, and He gave it to them as an eternal inheritance. Not only did God say that this land was for the Jewish people, but He also promised to protect them and bless them in it.

As Christians, we believe in the Bible, but more than this, as the Holy Spirit leads us, we feel a deep love for the things God loves. Israel and the Jewish people are loved by God. It is heart-breaking when we see our own nations, that we also love, turning against God’s will.

Joel 3:1-2 says:

“For behold, in those days and at that time,
When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem,
I will also gather all nations,
And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I will enter into judgment with them there
On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations;
They have also divided up My land.”

God is making it clear that at a future time there will be judgment upon the nations who “divided up My land.”

When the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met this week to vote on whether ‘Palestine’ should become a full member, this would have gone a long way towards formal recognition of a Palestinian state. The UNSC passes binding resolutions that dictate international law. It got close to passing, but it was thankfully vetoes by the USA. God bless the US for doing so.

Just image if the US had not vetoes. The United Kingdom decided to sit on the fence in this vote. As the saying goes, not to act, is to act. Not to speak, is to speak. The UK was happy to let the world decide what it would do without getting in the way. And God would not have found us guiltless.

The UK was once known as a Christian nation. In fact, the freedoms we have in this country are thanks to our Judeo-Christian heritage. The foundations of our nation are being eroded by attitudes that are not just neutral to God, they are anti-God. And we see that in the way that protests against Israel are happening on our streets.

The characterisation of these protests as pro-Palestinian is wrong. They are anti-Israel, antisemitic, and anti-God. The final one is the worst offence of all. Satan has stirred up the hearts of men against the one place God chose for His plans and purposes to be fulfilled.

The UK needs to change course when it comes to its compromised foreign policy. RAF fighters were actively involved in defending Israel at the beginning of the week against the very real threat of Iran, but by the end of it we were too scared to stand against political correctness and therefore too willing to sit idly by and let the world divide up Israel. This is especially shameful as it would have given recognition to terror groups still holding Jews hostage and authorities that continue to fund terror.

We pray that Christians will rise up in the UK and use their voices to let our leaders know where we as the Church stand on this issue. We love our nation, and we know it will be blessed if we stand with Israel. We also know that God will judge our nation if it allows a Palestinian state to be carved into the land that God gave the Jewish people.
