Papua New Guinea is looking to open an embassy to Israel in Jerusalem.

The exciting news was announced by Israel’s Foreign Ministery late last month. Papua New Guinea does not have an embassy in Israel at present, but it does maintain a consulate near Tel Aviv.

The two countries have had diplomatic relations since 1978 and Papua New Guinea has long been voting in favour of Israel at the United Nations.

It is thought that the decision by Papua New Guinea could cause tensions between its Muslim neighbours, Malaysia and Indonesia who currently don’t recognise Israel as a nation.

Interestingly, Papua New Guinea voted in 2018 to condemn the US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. So this seems to be a turnaround from that position.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said the plan to open an embassy in Jerusalem is “further evidence of the warm and important relationship between the countries.”

Let’s pray for Papua New Guinea as they make this important decision. We look forward to seeing more countries honour Israel and the Jewish people by recognising Jerusalem as their capital.
