Security forces at the Qalandiya checkpoint have foiled an attempt to smuggle into the Palestinian Authority five tons of glycerol, a chemical that can be used to manufacture explosives, the Shin Bet announced on Wednesday morning.

During the operation, a truck was located without permission to enter the dangerous chemical. The truck was driver arrested and turned over to security agencies for further investigation.

Due to the dual-purpose nature of the material that can potentially be used by terror groups, its transfer to the Palestinian Authority requires a license.

Glycerol is the starting material in the manufacture of nitroglycerin, the explosive liquid commonly found in dynamite and some propellants.
