On this day in 1917, Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour penned a letter proclaiming that Britain would support the establishment of “a national home for the Jewish people”.
It was one of the most important political acts in modern history. Yet, the declaration was not just the right thing to do politically. It was the right thing to do Biblically. The Balfour Declaration of 1917 recognised a legal entitlement already given to the Jewish people by God.
Lord Balfour, Prime Minister David Lloyd and much of the Cabinet were driven by a Christian conscience regarding the Jews returning to their historic homeland. It reflected the fact that for over a Century prior, the Church in Britain had reconnected to its Judeo-roots with many Christian leaders and public figures having revelation of God’s plan for Israel and the Jewish people.
Whilst Britain has not always remained reliable in its standing with Israel, either politically or even within the Church, the Balfour Declaration reminds us of what happens when a country aligns itself with the plans and purposes of God.
On this Centenary of the Balfour Declaration, we declare that Britain still has a role in standing with Israel.
At Christians United for Israel, we are committed to seeing a transformation in Britain’s attitude towards Israel and the Jewish people. In Parliament we want to see our politicians take a strong, uncompromising stand for Israel. We long to see anti-Semitism in whatever form it takes rooted out from this nation. And it is our desire to see a cultural change towards Israel in the Church in Britain.
