“For His mercy endures forever”

Psalm 136 is a wonderful Psalm giving thanks for the Lord’s mercy. The chapter begins by describing the greatness of God. It transitions to the faithfulness of God towards Israel and the Jewish people. Then it concludes with describing God’s mercy to those who trust in Him.

Israel is a testimony of God’s power, His promises, His provision, and His petition. He has demonstrated His power by delivering Israel from her enemies. He has set His promises by establishing a Covenant with His people; He has demonstrated His provision by ensuring Israel is cared for, and He petitions us to respond with thanksgiving. Why is thanksgiving so important? Thanksgiving is key to connecting us with God; it frames our understanding of who God is; it provides reference points for witnessing God’s favour; and it relieves us of any heavy burdens by magnifying His power and His favour.

Right now the nation of Israel is celebrating the return of its remaining 20 hostages. We celebrate with the nation of Israel too. But we are mindful that the threat from Israel’s enemies still exist. Hamas has still not laid down its arms. Antisemitism is still on the rise. Jew-hatred is still on our streets, in our university halls, and on our screens. Voices in the media continue to scream angrily at Israel. The respite from fighting is welcome, but there is no room for complacency. Israel’s battles are not over. But, we give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” God’s faithfulness towards Israel is still in tact. His promises are still secure. Their land of inheritance is still a heritage. Their enemies are already defeated. God’s mercy is enduring. Hallelujah!
