London’s iconic ferris wheel, the London Eye, will light up to depict a menorah in celebration of Hanukkah.
The 400ft wheel will be lit on the fifth night of Hanukkah, or Chanukah, on Thursday 22nd December for the second consecutive year.
The initiative is a project of the Jewish News and Jewish Leadership Council in partnership with lastminute.com.
Editor of the Jewish News, Richard Ferrer said, “This will surely be one of the most visible celebrations of Chanukah in the world and a wonderful expression of Britain’s place as a welcoming home to so many faiths and cultures. Huge thanks must go to the bosses of the London Eye and Jewish Leadership Council for bringing this vision to reality.”
Elsewhere in the capital, the traditional menorah in Trafalgar Square was lit at the start of Hanukkah. It is sponsored by the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority and will be lit for visitors to see from Sunday 18 December until Monday 26 December.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m proud of the tradition we have in London of hosting a giant Chanukiah in the heart of our city. It’s an opportunity to celebrate this joyous festival with the Jewish community and to reflect on the message of hope Chanukah brings.”
Hanukkah Sameach to our Jewish residents and friends celebrating on Sunday. May this Festival of Lights bring happiness and health for all 🔯 🕯️ 🎇

It was truly an honour to join members of London’s Jewish communities tonight in Trafalgar Square as we lit the Menorah in celebration of Chanukah.
