A new report released by the ADL highlights the troubling rise of antisemitism in the United States.

Here are some of the key points:

  • A total of 3,697 antisemitic incidents were reported in the US in 2022 (An average of 10 incidents per day)
  • 2022 saw the highest antisemitic incidents highest since records began in 1979
  • Harassment against Jews increased by 29%
  • Vandalism to Jewish properties (synagogues, homes and businesses) and desecration of Jewish cemeteries increased by 51%
  • Physical assaults on Jews rose by 26%
  • Antisemitic in colleges and public schools increased by 40%
  • All 50 States reported antisemitic incidents

According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), they worked alongside authorities and other organisations to compile the data with ADL staff verifying every incident to ensure there was no duplication or errors.

One difference with the 2022 data was that there was no major event to spark antisemitism. In 2021, there was a spike in antisemitic incidents relating to the Israel-Palestinian conflict. However, in 2022, only 6.5% of all antisemitic incidents were related to Israel or anti-Zionism, a decline from the previous year.

In terms of antisemitism related to Israel, the majority of these incidents occurred around college campuses which are a hotbed for anti-Israel propaganda.

The overall increase in antisemitic incidents around the country coincides with a recent survey highlighting that antisemitic viewpoints in America have increased. The number of Americans who now believe antisemitic tropes doubled since 2019, just a few short years.

In addition to the above information, the FBI’s own data also indicates that Jews are the religious minority most targeted in hate crimes in the US.

As Christians, we must continue to pray for our Jewish brothers and sisters and do all we can to counter the hatred of antisemitism. Antisemitism has no place in the Church and no place in our society.
